Maggotty High pulls out of Ben Francis, coaches apologise
Maggotty High's football programme has issued an apology to its school community after the team made a sudden withdrawal from the ISSA Ben Francis Knockout Tournament.
Maggotty was scheduled to face Mannings School on Thursday in their opening match. However, the coaching staff said the withdrawal became necessary after the emotional toll Hurricane Melissa took on several student athletes.
In a statement, the staff said the decision was difficult but unavoidable.
The statement read that the aftermath of the hurricane left many players emotionally and mentally shaken by the impact on their homes, families and daily routines. The coaches said that after a careful look at the team it became clear that the players were not mentally prepared or disciplined enough to handle the intensity and long term demands of the competition.
The coaches also apologised to ISSA and the wider Maggotty, Siloah and Coker communities as well as fans and sponsors. They said their first responsibility is to the well being, development and safety of the players and competing in the tournament under the current circumstances would not have been in the boys best interest.
They added that they understand the expectations placed on Maggotty High football and regret any frustration caused to stakeholders who invest their time and resources in the programme. The statement also said the coaches accept full responsibility for the disappointment.
Looking ahead, the staff said they plan to rebuild the programme, reinforce discipline and ensure players receive the support needed to return stronger both mentally and physically. They pledged to come back better prepared and ready to represent the school with pride, in keeping with the school motto which urges excellence through hard work and discipline.
ISSA confirmed Maggotty's withdrawal on Monday. Mannings will advance with a bye to the second round which is set for Tuesday December 16.
Maggotty created history this season by reaching the round of sixteen but failed to secure a win in group play. They lost to Glenmuir High one nil, Garvey Maceo three two and Clarendon College five nil.
